NOTES
Additional Information:This two-story brick veneer comemrcial structure with a flat sloping roof and a part stone rear wall has a polychromatic brick facade. Projecting segmental arched window hoods, and an arcade of corbeled arched forms in red brick that runs across the top of the facade terminating in brick piers at the ends and center accent the upper story. A street level cornice visually supported by brackets and utilitarian cast iron columns remain on the store front that has had minimal attention for contemporary use. This building is similar in style to the adjoining structure to the east, Benedict's (5-17).

This commercial structure is architecturally significant because it is a good vernacular interpretation of the more elaborate Victorian Romanesque commercial architecture popular during this period. In addition, the building is important to the streetscape of Darlington because it is one of the few 19th century structure in Darlington that has remained for the most part as it was built.

This building is historically significant to the development of Darlington's commercial district. Built prior to 1884, this building has as many as three businesses on the ground floor during the late 19th century. Located behind and adjcant to the Driver Opera House, it may have been owned by the Driver Brothers. In 1884 it was a cigar store, sewing machine store and a general store. In 1894 the post office was located in the middle section. By 1900 it was occupied by two groceries and a harness shop. In 1908 a hardware store occupied the west and middle portions, and a grocery on the east.

Covenant/Easement: From 6/10/1994 to 6/10/1999. A 'covenant file' exists for this property. It may contain additional information such as photos, drawings and correspondence. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office.
