NOTES
Additional Information:A TWO-STORY COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE CONSTRUCTED OF COURSED, DRESSED CUT-STONE WITH A FLAT ROOF THAT HAS A BRACKETED METAL CORNICE DECORATED WITH PRESSED METAL DESIGNS AND A CENTRAL GABLE ELEMENT EXTENDING ABOVE THE CORNICE. A STRING COURSE OF STONE CREATES A FRIEZE-LIKE AREA BELOW THE CORNICE WHILE CORBELED PEDIMENTED WINDOW HEADS ACCENT THE UPPER WINDOWS (NOW BOARDED UP). THE STORE FRONT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY ALTERED. HOWEVER, THIS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURALLY TO THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY REPRESENTATIVE REMAINING OF A STONE STORE BUILDING WITH A STONE FACADE IN THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT. THE TARRELL BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DARLINGTON'S COMMERCIAL DISTRICT. THE TARRELL BUILDING ERECTED PRIOR TO 1884 WAS IN THE 1880'S A DRY GOODS STORE.(C) IN 1897 RICHARD E. TARRELL, ONE TIME SHERIFF OF LAFAYETTE COUNTY (1895-96), BOUGHT THE BANKRUPT STOCK OF FRANK CORNELIUS LOCATED IN ANOTHER BUILDING (NOW NYFF'S CLOTHING).(E,F) IT IS NOT KNOWN WHEN TARRELL MOVED HIS FURNITURE STORE TO THIS BUILDING AND ADDED THE CORNICE WITH THE TARRELL NAME ON IT. TARRELL MOVED TO SOUTH DAKOTA IN 1909 AND HIS SON RICHARD H. TARRELL REMAINED IN DARLINGTON TO TAKE CHARGE OF THE FURNITURE BUSINESS.(D,F)
