Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Early frame house with massing and details (gable returns and doorway enframement) indicative of houses built in Wisconsin prior to the Civil War. The original exterior, probably wood siding or clapboard, is covered with composition siding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: J. Ballard Cross was an early settler in Milwaukee County. He arrived from Oswego, N.Y. in 1843 and settled in Sect. 21, Town of Lake, where he became a farmer and wagon-maker. A local resident's meoirs say "the Old Cross Farm" was also a stagecoach stop on the Old Chicago Road. The exact date of construction has not been determined; it was built sometime after 1843 and before 1876, when the county atlas shows a house on 39A at this location to be owned by I. (sic) B. Cross. |
