NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. MOVED TO SPRINGSTEAD FROM EMERSON IN 1916. "This unique property, on the National Register of Historic Places, includes a rare French Canadian logger's cabin, one of few left from the pre-1900 era of pine logging by itinerant, independent loggers, who usually abandoned their homesteads when the lumber was gone. The main buildings on this property include a caretaker's cabin and a guide's cabin built by Randall Burns, a Chicago attorney who had a summer home nearby. Many wealthy summer home owners in the Northwoods hired local residents as caretakers -- for a relatively small fee and the use of a residence nearby, a summer home owner hoped that a caretaker would protect his or her property from fire, theft, and squatters. Other buildings on this site served as Springstead's post office and a general store."
