Additional Information: | Characterized by a rather wide metal cornice projecting over a band of ornamentation including dentils, brackets and a row of lion heads, the brick brick three-story P. Wehrers Building is further decorated by round arched window hoods on the third story and shoulder arched window hoods on the second story of the recessed facade, which are features associated with the commercial Italianate style. Features include: projecting corbeled brick cornice with parapet abvoe that is identical to adjacent Gantert Building at 110 S. 3rd Street; as are the long narrow window heads on the upper story and the segmental arched window heads on the 2nd story; capped piers visually supporting the entablature frame the facade; store front completely altered. Although the store front has been altered the P. Wehrens Building constructed in 1874 is an excellent example of 19th century commercial architecture that featured more elaboarate ornamentation than the earlier Italianate influenced architecture. |
