NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Cornice returns and oculus in front and south cross gables; large two story gabled roofed wing extending at right angle to the main structure. Three story square tower with battlements and paired round arched windows placed in angle of house. Two story open front porch on front gable and on side of south wing supported by massive brick piers, wrought iron railings have been added to porches. Broad projecting cornice with heavy paired brackets and dentil trim; heavily articulated arched projecting window heads with corbeled ends over long narrow windows, three sided bay window with bracketed eaves; hiproofed rear addition. Important as an example of the home of a prominent brewery owner in the 19th century La Crosse, the house is typical of a large house of the 1880s. The alteration of the porches has lessened the architectural significance of the structure. Built by Johanna Heileman after the death of Gottlieb. The house appears to have been built on the site of the former Heileman house while Johanna lived at 121 South Third Street. Gotlieb and Johana Heileman were both important in the history of La Crosse. Gottlieb was a brewer who was involved in a partnership with John Gund between 1858-1872. Gund withdrew from the partnership in 1872. Heileman then operated the City Brewery until his death in 1878. His wife Johanna became president of the G. Heilman Co. the first woman to be head of a corporation in Wisconsin. Constructed at finished cost of $15,000. Rehabilitated by Heileman Brewery for offices--paint removed from exterior and trim painted white. 2017 UPDATE - HOUSE APPEARS SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME AS WHEN IT WAS LAST SURVEYED IN 1996.
