Additional Information: | Composed of 150 acres of land featuring bluff, forest and hill areas, Grandad Bluff Park was obtained by the city as a gift from the citizens, including Mrs. Hixon who wished to save the bluff from further quarrying. Fitted with the stone shelter in the 1930s by the WPA, the park is essential to the quality of life in La Crosse. The city acquired Grandad Bluff lands in 1912. At the same time La Crosse was busily acquiring other properties for park purposes. In fact, 1908-1912 was the era of La Crosse's major acquisition of parks. Alan Nolen, the famous landscape architect worked for the municipality during 1908-1912 and he planned a unified park system connected by landscaped roads for La Crosse. |
