Additional Information: | Miller and Kahler were the builders. Three bay structure; small projecting cornice with pressed metal freize of festoon and floral design; three-sided oriel window with row of small windows along the roof line; sheet metal with pressed floral designs covers the oriel window; altered store front. Used by Alfred Swarthout, the undertaker, as early as 1901, the well preserved Horner building is typical of the modest turn of the century commercial structures found in North La Crosse. In 1897 C.E. Geisenheimer ran a jewelry store at 1117 Caledonia. By 1900, the store is at 1220 Caledonia. This address was not listed in any previous city directory. Exhibiting turn of the century eclecticism, the two story brick (now painted) Horner Building has a late Victorian Queen Anne styled oriel window covered with pressed metal in a floral design and a festoon decorated frieze derived from Classical design sources under the dentil trim along the top of the facade. The store front has been altered completely over the years. 2016 UPDATE - THIS BUILDING LOOKS THE SAME AS WHEN IT WAS LAST SURVEYED IN 1996. |
