NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Two-story pedimented gabled three-sided projecting bays on east and west sides; round arched six-part window; brackets; gable roofed three-sided bay and half-round window in gable peak articulate the facade; segmental arched windows with radiating brick voussoirs and stone keystones in side elevation; balustrated front entrance porch (now screened in) with classical pediment over the entrance. Unusual because of its Romanesque Revival influence, this Victorian house is a significant representative, important to the architectural variety of La Crosse. Hugh H. Byrne, chief of police, lived here in 1907. John Hughes was a partner in the contracting firm, Sees and Hughes contractors, and he probably built this house. The architect, Andrew Roth, was the son of a local carpenter and made himself into an architect by working for CJ Ross and later with Hugo Schick.
