| Additional Information: | Intersecting hip roofs with front cross gable; paired brackets and dentil trim under the eaves; cornice returns in cross gable; west side two-story rectangular bay with hip roof; shed roofed addition with wall dormer. Constructed during the early period of La Crosse's history, this brick house is an important representative that has retained a good deal of integrity, although now in need of repair. Fred Kroner, Sr. owned the Kroner Hardware Store at 116 South 3rd Street and was the brother of Adam Kroner of Kroner and Dittman Hardward stores. Kroner built this house prior to 1866, when he has associated with Christian Scharpf in the hardware business. 2015- "A fine example of Italianate style, the two-story painted brick Fred Kroner House has an irregular, hip-roofed mass and large, wraparound screen porch. Elements typical of this style are the tall narrow, double-hung indows and projecting eaves with decorative paired brackets and dentil molding. The pedimented roofline on the south facade with flanking cornice returns are Classical details seen in local variations of the Italianate style. Note the oculus window in the center of the gable. The Kroner House is significant for its association with Fred Kroner, a prominent local merchant, and German immigrant who moved to La Crosse in 1856. He worked as a store clerk before opening his own hardware store on Pearl Street in 1865. Kroner's business became one of the largest retail hardware companies in the region.
