Additional Information: | Hip and gable roofed two-story house with two-story gable roofed projecting bays at front and east side, three-sided open porch with round corners supported by Tuscan columns on paneled bases, bay window, and east side addition. Altered by the addition of modern siding. 2015- "The exterior of the Frederick Copeland House has been reduced from its turn-of-the-century elegance. However, this residence retains architectural integrity and is considered to be contributing to the historic character of the neighborhood. The two-story multi-gabled hip-roofed asymmetrical mass is typical of the Queen Anne style. The Cass Street facade features a third-story pedimented gable-end, punctuated by a rectilinear Palladian window. A curved wraparound porch with tapered Tuscan columns adds to the grandiose appearance. Frederick Copeland came to La Crosse in 1871. Copeland served as mayor of La Crosse from 1891 to 1893. In 1909, Copeland donated a large riverfront parcel on the north side of La Crosse for a city park. Dedicated in 1911, Copeland Park was the first of several city parks proposed by landscape architect John Nolen in his park plan for La Crosse." -"La Crosse, Wisconsin: 10th & Cass Residential Historic District Tour", Prepared by Eric J. Wheeler, (2015). |
