| Additional Information: | City of Green Bay, Wisconsin - Architectural and Historical Intensive Survey Report Phase 1 - 2021 Intact, original railroad roundhouse and car and engine repair shop. Roundhouse has 40 stalls. The semi-circular, 40 stall roundhouse building faces west with the still operating motorized turntable as a focus. The intact, single story roundhouse features brick, pilastered exterior walls, a shed roof with single brick parapet and tar roofing. The west facing facade consists of 40 ground to parapet height modern doors for admitting engines to the interior. The east facing facade originally consisted of a row of flat arch windows recessed into brick panels set between pilasters and distributed regularly along the facade. Most of these windows have been filled with more modern, energy efficient materials. Attached to the east facade of the roundhouse is the large, gable roofed car repair shop. The shop building has an irregular plan formed by the joining of two separate, gable roofed buildings of unequal size which share 9 contiguous roof line. The walls of these buildings are of brick. The post and beam steel framing of the building is expressed directly on the exterior walls by both vertical and horizontal brick pilasters which also serve to enframe the occasional windows,most of which have been filled. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad roundhouse and repair shop complex is significant as a largely intact example of a once common building type which has been largely replaced by more modern buildings. The astylistic, utilitarian style of the buildings is strongly expressed architecturally and is expressive of both the building type and its construction method. Of lesser significance but still unusual is that the complex is still used by the firm that built it for the purpose it was originally designed for. The building is in good repair and although modernized in details such as window infilling retains a high degree of integrity. |
