| Additional Information: | Projecting paired segmental arched brick window and door hoods; four over four windows with fan shaped overlights; cut brick projecting belt courses divide the structure horizontally; arched entrance with keystone brick hood, double leafed door and fan shaped overlight; north addition; passage ways building to other brewery structures. Combining a rather simple utilitarian structure with a free fashionable architectural stylistic devices, the four story Leinenkugel Brew House constructed in 1890 is divided horizontally by recessed panels bartered by denticulated and corbelled brick work and ornamented by projecting brick arched window heads arranged in pairs on the front facade. An elliptical arch overlight above the double leafed entrance door associated with classical based styles and the round arched overlights suggestive of the Romanesque style gives the structure an eclectic appearance. Constructed in 1890 to expand the Leinenkugel Brewery operation, the brick brewing house, although exhibiting asympathetic additions, has retained significant architectural character. Established in 1867, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is the longest continually operating industry in Chippewa Falls. This four story brew house, part of the historic development of the brewery, was built in 1890. With the addition of this building, the brewery's capacity was increased to 200 barrels a day, compared with 1,800 barrels a year in 1880. The brewery was known as Leinenkugel's Spring Brewery at the time this building was constructed. The firm became known as the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company in 1898. As part of the historic development of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, the longest continuously operating industry in Chippewa Falls, this building is an historically significant representative of the early industrial development of Chippewa Falls. Leinenkugel and Miller's Spring Brewery, as it was originally known, was one of four "primary processing" industries (beer, lumber, flour and woolen manufacture) which gave Chippewa Falls its earliest industrial base. It is also noteworthy that this brewery is one of few family owned breweries left in the country. RELATED BUILDINGS: Malt House (25/23); Stable (25/23); Spring House (41/14). 2021- The Brew House (AHI 38850) is a four-story brick structure constructed in 1890, connected via second-story walkway to the Malt House to the south. A one-story brick addition has been attached to the eastern elevation since the time of the last survey. The upper stories of the eastern elevation have been re-clad with a coursed cut-stone veneer, mimicking the stone construction of the neighboring Malt House. Windows on this elevation have been replaced and the window openings altered, although the segmental arched brick surrounds with keystones above multi-paned sashes with fanlights have been recreated. The southern elevation of the Brew House retains its original windows, hood molds, and fenestration. |
