NOTES
Additional Information:Additional map codes are: FRV 8/16-20. Additional photo codes are: FRV 8/16-20 This two story brick structure was built in 1948 to handle orders for supercalenders demanded by the Consolidated Paper Company for its coated paper. To the west is the old foundry constructed around 1919 to replace the original framed foundry. The structures in closest proximity to West's Canal, toward the eastern edge of the site, were constructed prior to 1900 and may date to the late 1880's. This structure was used as a machine shop and the smaller gabled structure served as company office. The single story structure to the west was added around 1906 for general storage. The Crosby Ketchum Blacksmith Shop started on this site in 1857 and by growth and expansion became the Appleton Machine Company. formally organized as the Appleton Machine Company, by the Saecker Brothers in 1883, the company purchased the Basset Interests four years later. The growth of Appleton Machine closely follows the expansion of paper making. As paper making technology changed appleton Machine developed new and faster machinery requiring enlarged facilities. Sppleton Machine built a complete line of equipment for superfinishing and stock preparation; and pioneeered the Roberts continuous pulpwood grinder (c. 1939) as well as the super calender (1946). During the Second World War Appleton Machine produced torpedo warheads. 2021 - not extant as of 2021, aerial photos indicate demolition prior to 2005. See AHI 38962 for remaining Appleton Machine Co. buildings.
