NOTES
Additional Information:Additional map codes are: 8/34. A two-story. painted brick, shed-roofed Queen Anne style structural glass Art Modern style storefront and an intact upper facade. The upper facade features an unusual arrangement of a large, tall central window with wood lintel incised with a floral pattern set beneath a segmental, slightly projecting, brick hood mold flanked by plain, one over one, sash windows of lower height. The upper facade is divided into multiple panels by projecting brick courses. The tin covered cornice ornamented with metal balls is surmounted by a panelled brick parapet. The Art Moderne storefront for the tavern is made of two colors of structural glass tiles laid in a bold abstract pattern surrounding the glass block and aluminum framed plate glass windows. The shallow, reeded aluminum canopy is surmounted by what appears to be the original enamelled metal and neon sign. This structure contributes to the significance of the Proposed College Avenue Historic District under criterion C as a fine building displaying change over time in its high quality Art Moderne storefront. The intact upper facade displays the picturesque fenestral imposition and raised brickwork detailing that abstractly divides the wall plane into an interesting composition of variously shaped panels typical of the more exuberant Queen Anne buildings. The incised lintel over the central window, cove cornice with spherical ornaments and panelled parapet are other interesting Queen Anne features. The splendid Art Moderne storefront of structural glass, glass block, and natural aluminum is a high quality intact example of the abstract modernism of the 1930-1959's era that has achieved significance in its own right. 2024: Not resurveyed, not contributing to College Avenue Historic District. Reconstructed storefront level with stucco cladding and replacement windows.
