Additional Information: | This structure contributes to the significance of the East College Avenue Residential Historic District under Criterion C as an example of a gabled-ell village house of about 1880 that was brought-up to date with new front fenestration and a deep colonial style front porch with a flaring roof tied back into the roof of the ell to give the house the cottagey look so fashionable in the early 1900's. The front porch was partially enclosed and glazed to form a sunroom still later. Garage also on property. This house was previously surveyed in 1991 and no visible exterior changes have occurred since then. City assessor's records offer a circa 1880 date of construction; the house appears on an 1886 Sanborn map with a porch that extended along the entire south facade. The existing porch was altered to its current size sometime after 1924. The earliest known owner of the home (according to an 1884-85 city directory) was Dr. William H. Chilson, a dentist (and alderman) and his wife Grace. |
