NOTES
Additional Information:This is a two-story, rectangular, end-gable-roofed brick house with limestone foundations. The simple three bay facade has three equally spaced segmentally-arched windows on the second story over a full width wooden, shed-roofed, Queen Anne porch with a pedimented gable over the steps. The porch has turned posts, a spindly gretwork frieze and a fine arcaded Queen Anne railing. The Drew Street elevation features two bays of fenestration with a shallow, canted, panelled wooden oriel on the first story. At the rear is a one-story addition with a Queen Anne porch detailed similarly to the front porch. Attached to the rear is a modern steel-and-frame carport. The eaves of the main house are trimmed with a simple closed eaves cornice with raking board frieze. All of the original sash were replaced in late Victorian times with one-over-one double hung units. This structure contributes to the significance of the City Park Historic District under Criterion C as a rare surviving example of the pioneer architecture of Appleton. This straightforward brick cottage with its careful proportions illustrates the Late Federal/Greek Revival influenced vernacular architecture of the WI frontier in the 1850's and 1860's. Its long history of occupation is manifested in the fine Queen Anne verandah, bay window and rear porch added by later owners to bring the house up to date with its fashionable late Victorian neighbors. 2024: Demolished c.2000
