Additional Information: | Additional map codes are: FRV 8/7-9. Additional photo codes are: FRV 8/7-9 The Scolding Locks Company started in 1919 in the former McCann Building on W. College Ave. A machinist who had developed a hairpin embodying a two-way crimp sold the idea to a group o local business men who provided the money necessary to get the business underway. In 1922 the company moved to its new facility at 1520 Rogers Ave. It measured 40x 200 ft. At the time it was the most modern hairpin company in the U.S. The company motto was "Everypin a perfect pin." The company exclusively made hairpins until 1929 when bobbed hairpins were added. If the line had not been expanded the company would have gone out of business. The company was incorporated in 1929. During WWII Scolding manufactured bomb fuses for the war effort. In 1967 the company expanded the facility to double its size. This made it the largest manufacturer of hairpins and bobby pins in the world. The also make reflector clips. The structure currently (06/1981) measures 94 x 200 ft., is one story, with a flat roof. It has a concrete foundation with brick exterior walls. The original building had a boom-town facade which has been added to. |
