NOTES
Additional Information:1981 SURVEY INFO: The Lancaster Residence is a simple one story clapboard structure. Twin gabled sections are connected by a center rectangular section which is spanned by a veranda. The 1897 map shows a T-shaped dwelling with a veranda which indicates that the eastern portion of the home was a later addition. Leonard Lancaster, a native of the State of Maine, settled in Eau Claire in 1856 and entered the lumber business. In 1861 he joined Company L of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry. Following an insubordination incident, Lancaster was court-martialed and sentenced to be shot. At the last minute he was reprieved and sentenced instead to three years banishment to Dry Tortugas - a sentence which was commuted to three months. After his imprisonment, Lancaster returned to Eau Claire and with some assistance his dishonrouable discharge was changed to an honourable discharge (B). 1987 SURVEY UPDATE: The house has been remodeled. The window on the west has been changed to two smaller windows. The screened porch has been enclosed. The doors are in the same area, two double hung windows are between the doors.
