Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Torn down to make way for Riverview Plaza. The former Soo Line Depot is a large brick structure characterized by a symmetrical facade dominated by a center open area which once allowed trains access to the building. Stone accents this area and is again used as a stringcourse marking the building's two stories. Additional details include paired windows and a parapet which has been partially removed. Also of interest is the remaining Soo Line sign. In 1925 the depot of the Wisconsin Central Railroad (the Wisconsin Central was absorbed by the Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Sault Saint Marie Railroad, known as the Soo Line, in 1909) located at this site was demolished and replaced by the present structure, which continued to serve as the Soo Depot until 1941 (A). Sharing the building with the depot (it used the northern portion of the building) was a coffee warehouse and coffee roasting establishment - the Eau Claire Coffee Co. (B,C). Another warehouse area was in the rear. In 1955 the E.M. Hale and Company, publishers of children's books, was located in the building (D). |
