NOTES
Additional Information:Located across from University Park (formerly University Square), this two story brick residence originally served as the Eau Claire Children's Home. The building is characterized by long, narrow segmental arch bays capped by birck window hoods. Bay windows provide additional detailing. Since the 1978 reconnaissance survey, aluminum siding has been placed over the gables. A rear addition, also aluminum sided, is at the rear of the building.

"In 1872 it was agreed by the Christian women of Eau Claire that the various bands of workers engaged in charitable labors throughout the city should unite and form an aid society for uplifting and aiding the needy." In 1889 the association established a "children's home" for "the care of children needing protection, employment, and assistance until permanent homes could be secured for them" and rented this brick residence. In 1890 the children's home was incorporated and the house and lot were deeded to the association by Sigvald Quale. The officers of the association were Mrs. Daniel Shaw, president; Mrs. D.R. Moon and Mrs. Jane Rust, vice-presidents; Mrs. J.E. Cass, secretary; Mrs. C.M. Buffington, treasurer. (These women are for the most part wives of prominent lumbermen.)

The 1914 county history noted that "in the twenty-five years of its existence this association has furnished three hundred and seventy-two destitute children with a happy, healthful, well equipped home and an opportunity to develop in such manner as to be fitted for the places open to them in due season" (A).

1997-Severely altered.
