Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The sole surviving cottage style gasoline station located in the section of Eau Claire known as Shawtown. The diminutive structure is shingle covered and has a steeply pitched roof. Similar stations in the vicinity were noted on the 1978 inventory card but these have been demolished. In 1931, Willis Oatman operated this station at the southwest corner of Ferry and Menomonie streets (A). 1997 survey update: The Oatman Filling Station was built in the era of domestic design for filling stations. It is reminiscent of the standardized appearance of Pure Oil stations that were most popular during this period. Willis Oatman's son, Lloyd, operated the station for many years before handing management to his son Lloyd. Lloyd Oatman handed management to Ray Best in 1973. Best operated the station until its closing in September 1996. The station was operated by Texaco into the early 1980s when it became a Sinclair station. |
