NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: Situated on a small rise and surrounded by a spacious lawn, the one story symmetrically arranged bungalow is immediately identified by two tiers (including porch) of exposed rafters which evoke an "airplane" image, which is way the style is referred to as an airplane bungalow. The entrance porch which projects from beneath the broadly extending roof of the house is supported by square wood posts which rest on battered concrete piers. Structural members - purlins, a tie beam, and king post - are also details of the porch that is enclosed with a simple wood railing. The building's main entry is centrally placed on a projecting element. Horizontal framing, which continues across the top of all the structure's openings and unites the design, emphasizes the entrance. Echoing the battered porch piers, the corners of the entrance projection are flared and stucco covered. The light colored stucco contrasts with the darkly stained wood shingles which side the upper two thirds of the residence. Flanking the entrance are large three-part bays. Small vertically-divided windows are located on the sides of the entrance area and on either side of the exterior chimney which rises through the roof on the east side of the building. Also on the east, a glassed-in sun porch breaks from the rectangular block of the house. The foundation is made of concrete and the roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The main facade faces the North. This residence is in excellent condition. At the rear of the property are two small frame sheds also with exposed rafters. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Kenyon house, 333 Garfield Avenue, is a significant architectural example representing a type and period of construction. Among the bungalows in the city, the stucco and s hingle covered residence is distinguished for the quality of its design which suggests both Prairie School and Western Style influences. The contrast of stucco and shingle surfaces, the prominent horizontal framing, and use of exposed rafters and purlins forms an exceptional composition which identifies the building as an architect's rather than a builder's product. (Note: At this time the architect is unknown.) The well maintained and architecturally intact dwelling has recently been designated an Eau Claire landmark. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: The home has had a number of owners since its construction in the early twentieth century. ALSO IN THIRD WARD HISTORIC DISTRICT (EXPANSION) 2016- "This rather elaborate bungalow was typical of a high-income neighborhood in the early 1900s. The contrast of stucco and shingle surfaces, the prominent horizontal framing and the use of exposed rafters form an exceptional composition which identifies the building as an architect's rather than a builder's project. More modest versions of bungalows can be seen in the Emery Street Bungalow District on the East Side Hill." -"Eau Claire Landmarks: Designated Historic Properties in Eau Claire, Wisconsin", Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, P.O. Box 5148, 2016.
