NOTES
Additional Information:Occupying a corner location, the McDermott residence reflects a Queen Anne influence. The large two story frame dwelling (siding covers the original clapboard walls) features a round corner tower with a conical roof, a small covered balcony on the second floor, and a veranda which wraps around two sides of the structure. The veranda is supported by turned posts and decorated by a spindle valance. Originally a second covered balcony was located over the entrance on W. Grand Avenue (A). Thomas McDermott was involved in various phases of the lumber business (B). 1997- Scalloped asbestos siding now. In 2002 current owner abated and removed the asbestos and the house is now clad in cement board siding. 2006- Spectacular example of Queen Anne style in Eau Claire. Steeply pitched gable roof, corner turrett, wraparound porch, turned spindle work ornamentation. 2016- "An excellent example of the Queen Anne style, this house was built in 1886 by Thomas McDermott, a local lumberman and businessman. Its asymmetrical facade features a round tower at the corner of the house, along with a curved porch that wraps around the house on two sides. McDermott originally moved to Eau Claire in 1866 and worked in the lumber industry as both an explorer and a scout. He worked for a number of lumber enterprises and later retired and began to buy and sell lumbered parcels in Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. He was also the superintendent of the Chippewa and Menomonie Railroad for two years." -"Eau Claire Landmarks: Designated Historic Properties in Eau Claire, Wisconsin", Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, P.O. Box 5148, 2016.
