Abbie Lauer, original owner (1922-26) widow Jos. Lauer V.-p. Milwaukee Glove Co.(permit and C.D.) Curt Hoerig, insurance agent 1927-1975 (C.D.) "Designed by architect Henry Lotter and constructed in 1922, this two-story, brick residence has a rather austere exterior, exhibiting only exposed tails to indicate its overall Craftsman design. The interior features coved ceilings; floral and fruit, plaster crown moldings, and extensive woodwork. In 1988, a fire occurred in the living room; the immediate damage was contained to that room, leaving only the brick fireplace intact. Wanting to recreate the woodwork, and Orlandini Studios re-crafted the crown moldings. Joseph Lauer was born in New Berlin, Wisconsin, in 1870, the son of German immigrants. His wife Abbie, was born in Milwaukee in 1874, and they were married in 1896. The Lauers had seven children: Cyril, Clarence, Jerome, Marcel, Genevieve, Aurita, and Leora. Joseph began his business career as a clothier, the store became known as Joseph Lauer & Co. By 1905, he and partner John Kulzick, began the Milwaukee Glove Company which incorporated the following year. Although Lauer died in 1923, his son Jerome took over his position as vice-president. In 1943, Jerome was able to purchase the Kulzick family's share of the business, and it became solely owned by the Lauer family. The Milwaukee Glove Company remains in business in Wisconsin; however, it moved from Milwaukee to Marinette in 1966."
