Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two story brick residence is characterized by features from both the Gothic and Italianate styles. The steeply pitched center gable accented by lacy bargeboards and finials reflect the Gothic Revival, while the paired bays, stone window hoods, and bay window are characteristic of the Italianate style. This combination of elements produces a pleasing and very picturesque dwelling. In 1944 the original porch was removed and the present one added. Darwin C. Whipple erected this home in 1876. Mr. Whipple, a captain in Wisconsin's 16th Regiment, was, in 1870, a part owner of the Otter Creek Woolen Mills. In 1880 he was involved with the Eau Claire Woolen Mills; in 1882 he was listed as a deputy sheriff; and in 1884 he was a partner in the firm of Whipple & Dunn, General Collecting and Loan Agents at 308 S. Barstow Street. The following year Mr. Whipple was listed at 413 Doty Street. In 1908, Albert Jones, an agent for the CM & S & P Railroad occupied the house. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shaker moved into the home in 1926. 2016- "This combination of architectural elements produces a pleasing and picturesque dwelling. The steeply pitched center gable, accented by lacy bargeboards, reflects the Gothic influence, while the stone window hoods and bay window are characteristic of the Italianate style. This was one of the earliest brick homes in Eau Claire. The original porch was removed in the 1940s. Darwin Whipple was a captain in the Civil War. In 1870, he was part owner of the Otter Creek Woolen Mills. He later was a partner of Whipple and Dunn General Collecting and Loan Management." -"Eau Claire Landmarks: Designated Historic Properties in Eau Claire, Wisconsin", Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, P.O.
