| Additional Information: | The former Starr Residence is a large two story frame (siding covers the original surface) structure. Distinguishing features include a twoer capped with a pyramidal roof, a decorated gable, and modillions accenting the eave line. The small entrance porch replaced a veranda. The residence is pictured in the 1906 supplement, but much of the picturesque quality evidence in the photo has been lost through the addition of siding and the reduction in the lot size. William J. Starr is first listed at this address in 1892. He is recorded as president of both the Wisconsin Refrigerator Company and the Davis and Starr Lumber Company. The Wisconsin Refrigerator Company, manufacturer of the "Wisconsin Peerless" was organized in 1888. A decade later the company was producing fifty refrigerators per day and shipping them to all parts of the country. (See site at 200 Spring St., 5L/7). The Davis and Starr Lumber Company was incorporated in 1886. In 1914 the officers in addition to Starr as president were I.M. Starr, vice-president and Burt E. Deyo, secretary and treasurer. Starr was also involved in the Eau Claire Book and Stationary Company (sse site as 320 S. Barstow Street, 21/21). |
