Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Located on the northwest corner of Water Street and Fourth Avenue is this two story commercial structure. The building has a brick veneer exterior, although asbestos siding obscures much of this original material. The facade is distinguished by a simple cornice, two segmental arch openings, and a largely intact storefront on the ground level. The metal pillars which frame the large display windows were made by the Phoenix Manufacturing Company of Eau Claire. A nice sign, which was recently repainted, is visible on the west elevation. There are concrete block additions to the rear. The upper story windows on the front and east side have been boarded and the windows inserted are standard size aluminum combination windows. This commercial building housed a dry goods and notion store in 1885. A grocery is listed in 1889 and only the general term "store" is noted on the 1897 Sanborn map. In 1908 the building was vacant and in 1931 a tin shop was located in the structure. |
