NOTES
Additional Information:The Merrill Iron Works building is significant under Criterion A, for its historical importance as Merrill's longest existing metal works industry, which has been in existence under several names from 1884 to the present (1992). This building is also significant under Criterion C as a good example of early twnetieth century commercial architecture in Merrill. It also is contributing in the proposed West Main Street Commercial District.

Merrill Iron Works began at this location in 1884 as Christensen and Son Machine Shop, with a small foundry shop. By 1890 David Christensen was utilizing steam power driven by wood fuel, and had taken on the name Merrill Iron Work. This structure was built between 1902 and 1907, as an office for the business. By 1913 the building also exhibited hardware for sale, and a one story warehouse addition was made. The company was a manufacturer of sawmill machinery. In 1919 the company was known as Merrill Machinery and Supply and in 1928 as Merrill Manufacturing Company, as producers of brightware goods, wire specialities and small metal stampings. Today, as Wire Products Manufacturing Corp., they are still in the metal products industry.

Re-surveyed in 2005. No significant change observed.
