| Additional Information: | The Eli and Elizabeth Daniels House was constructed in 1862 in an Italianate style. It is rectangular in plan with a stone foundation, clapboard siding with fluted corner pilasters, and an asphalt-shingled, low-pitched hipped roof with widely overhanging eaves with decorative paired brackets and a wide, paneled cornice board. A square cupola projects from the center of the roof and features a low-pitched hipped roof with overhanging eaves, decorative paired brackets, and paneled cornice boards; replacement one-over-one and single-pane windows are located in each elevation of the cupola. The front elevation of the building faces east and is symmetrical in composition with a projecting entry bay at the center of the façade. The entry bay features angled side walls, a hipped roof with overhanging eaves, paired brackets, and paneled cornice boards. The wood panel front door is located in the east wall of the entry bay and is accented via narrow, multi-pane sidelights and transom. Fluted, squared, pilasters are located at both front corners of the entry bay while its side elevations feature replacement four-over-four windows with narrow two-pane transoms. Single six-over-six windows with narrow, three-pane transoms are located on each side of the entry bay at the first story. The second story contains three evenly placed six-over-six windows with narrow three-pane transoms. All windows are newer replacements. Three-sided bay windows with decorative features mirroring the front entry bay are located at the first story of the south and north elevations. A one-story, gable-roofed wing projects from the building’s northwest corner and features clapboard siding with fluted corner pilasters and overhanging eaves with decorative paired brackets and paneled cornice boards. The house was built for Eli and Elizabeth Daniels; Eli Daniels was the founder of Auroraville and one the area's earliest Euro-American settlers. Daniels was also known for his introduction and promotion of the "Northwestern Greening" variety of apple. This house remained in the Daniels family for approximately 80 years. |
