Additional Information: | The Largon Lake School is a small frame vernacular schoolhouse built in 1896. It features an open pyramidal-roofed belvedere with concave sides, and a patterned brick chimney. There is an enclosed gabled entry porch on the front, with a sunburst motif in the gable end. This may have originally been a gabled overdoor. Largon Lake School was built for School District 6, which was organized in August, 1896. The school district's officers borrowed $800 from the state to purchase a one-acre lot (from the Beaver Dam Lumber Co.) and to build the school. The officers specified the dimensions of the building: 24' x 32', and 12' high. The school opened in November, 1896. It is said that the building was originally called LaFollette School. Largon Lake, which lies just west of the school, was named for an imagined resemblance to the shape of a lumberjack's boot, supposedly called a "laragon." Largon Lake School has been closed since 1948, when it was consolidated with McKinley School. Largon Lake School appears to be a good example of a rural schoolhouse, with good integrity. There are few rural schoolhouses left in Polk County. |
