NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: THIS TWO STORY BRICK WITH A SLOPING FLAT ROOF HAS A DECORATIVE CUT BRICK DENTICULATED CORNICE, SEGMENTAL ARCHED WINDOWS AND STONE WINDOW SILLS. A CAST IRON COLUMN VISUALLY SUPPORTS THE STRUCTURE AT THE RECESSED CHAMFERED ENTRANCE CORNER. THE BUILDING IS IMPORTANT TO CUBA CITY AS ONE OF TWO (GT 22-12) EARLY 20TH CENTURY BRICK COMMERICAL STRUCTURES RETAINING THEIR ORIGINAL CHARACTER. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: THE FLORINE BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CUBA CITY'S COMMERICAL DEVELOPMENT. FRANK FLORINE, A PHARMACIST CAME TO CUBA CITY IN 1895 AND OPENED A DRUG STORE. IN 1901, HE HAD THIS BUILDING ERECTED. HE REMAINED IN THE DRUG STORE BUSINESS FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS. THE SECOND STORY WAS USED AS A LODGE HALL BY THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, CATHOLIC KNIGHTS AND ROYAL NEIGHBORS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. THESE ORGANIZATIONS NO LONGER MEET HERE. THE BUILDING IS STILL OWNED BY THE FLORINE FAMILY, NOW HOUSES FLORINE'S LIQUOR AND GIFTS. (B,C) PREVIOUS OWNERS INCLUDE MIKE KIRK; HIS DATE OF OWNERSHIP IS UNKNOWN. G. McCREA OWNED IT FROM 1954 TO 1968. HARRIS HELMER OWNED THE BUILDING IN 1954. FRANK FLORINE OWNED IT FROM 1901 TO 1950. (A,B) 2025: The two-story Florine’s Drug Store, built in 1901, has a rectangular plan, stone foundation, and brick cladding. The flat roof has a parapet with a corbelled brick cornice on the front (east) facade. The parapet on the side (north and south) elevations has metal coping. The southeast corner has a cutaway entrance that is supported by a fluted, cast-iron column. The single-light wood entry door is flanked by sidelights and fixed windows with wood-panel walls. Fixed metal-frame storefront windows extend along the facade above a replacement brick veneer knee wall. Two first-story windows on the side (south) elevation are infilled with brick. The second story has downsized replacement windows in original segmental brick arched openings, with stone sills. Frank Florine operated a pharmacy in the building until 1950, according to the property’s WHPD record. The second story was used as a meeting hall. The Florine family continued to the own the building through the 1960s and 1970s and it operated as Florine’s Liquor and Gifts. It now houses a Subway restaurant.
