Additional Information:BUILDING IS PRE-1900. ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: THIS FRAME TWO STORY WITH SLOPING ROOF HAS PEDIMENTED WINDOW HEADS, DECORATIVE TRIM IN THE STREET FACING GABLE END AND PILASTER END BOARDS. THE STORE FRONT HAS BEEN ALTERED FOR CONTEMPORARY USE. THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST FRAME COMMERICAL/RESIDENTIAL STRUCTRUES ON MAIN STREET. THE WINDOW HEADS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE ON THE FRAME BANK BUILDING. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: THIS BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMMERICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CUBA CITY. THE RHOMBERG BUILDING WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT AS A TAVERN IN THE LATE 19TH CENTRUY. RHOMBERG WAS A BEER BREWER IN DUBUQUE. HE LEASED THE BUILDING TO VARIOUS PROPRIETORS WHO OPERATED THE TAVERN AND SOLD RHOMBERG'S BEER. ONE OF THE PROPRIETORS OF THE 1890'S WAS JOSEPH HAUSER. THE BUILDING HAS HAD A VARIETY OF BUSINESES LOCATED IN IT. DILLON DONAHOO HAD A HARDWARE AND VARIETY STORE HERE BETWEEN 1908 AND 1911. WEBER'S PROCESSING PLANT WAS LOCATED IN THE BUILDING IN THE 1930'S. IT HAS RECENTLY BEEN A SPORTING GOODS STORE PRIOR TO ITS BEING HARLIE'S AND GAYLE'S TAVERN. (C)
