NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. (GABRIEL MILLS HOUSE). ARCITECTURAL STATEMENT: A TWO-STORY BRICK HOUSE WITH INTERSECTING SLOPING TIN ROOF THAT HAS AN ITALIANATE DETAILED CORNICE AND BRACKTES UNDER THE BROAD OVERHANG OF THE GABLE AND EAVES. A ROUND ARCHED WINDOW IN THE GABLE PEAKS, FLATSTONE LINTELS OVER THE SIX OVER SIX WINDOWS AND THE CENTRALLY PLACED SIDELIGHTED FRONT DOOR, AND EXTERIOR WOODEN SHUTTERS ACCENT THE SYMMETRICALLY DESIGNED RED BRICK ELEVATIONS. FOUR CHIMNEYS AT EITHER END OF THE ROOFS AND A TWO-LEVEL SIDE PORCH WITH A SECOND-STORY BALUSTRADE ON THE REAR WING, THAT IS IDENTICAL TO THE PORCH ON THE THOMAS HOUSE (3-13), FURTHER CHARACTERIZES THIS HOUSE THAT IS SITED ON A LARGE ESTATE SIZE LOT. A SMALL ONE STORY (FORMERLY A KITCHEN) EXTENSION IS ATTACHED TO THE REAR WING. SOME RESTORATION WORK ON THE HOUSE WAS DONE C. 1975. (B) THIS HOUSE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT IS AN EXCELLENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SUBSTANTIAL MID-19TH CENTURY BRICK ARCHITECTURE THAT HAS BEEN MAINTAINED IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE. IN ADDITION, THIS HOUSE OF A PROMINENT FAMILY HAS BEEN A VISUAL LANDMARK IN HAZEL GREEN FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS. PREVIOUS OWNERS INCLUED FOUR PEOPLE. K. CURWEN OWNED THE BUILDING SINCE 1952, AND IS NOW THE CURRENT OWNER, (B). REBECCA ANDREWS AND ANN ANDREWS OWNED IT SOME TIME BEFORE 1952, (B,C). GABRIEL MILLS OWNED IT IN 1860.
