THE ONE AND A HALF STORY HOUSE HAS AN IRREGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION, A MULTI-GABLE ROOF, PROMINENT WINDOW HOODS AND A SOUTH SIDE BAY WINDOW. THIS 1868-69 STRUCTURE IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION.

SINCE FIRST SURVEYED IN 1976 THIS HOUSE HAS BEEN RESIDED IN VINYL.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

THIS RESIDENCE IS IDENTIFIED AS THE "OLD" C. H. BAXTER HOUSE IN AN EARLY PHOTO. (THE "NEW" C. H. BAXTER RESIDENCE IS LOCATED JUST TO THE NORTH AT 446 N. MADISON STREET, 7/28). IN THE LANCASTER SOUVENIR OF 1900, THE HOUSE IS LISTED AS THE H. W. BROWN RESIDENCE. BROWN, WHO MARRIED C. H. BAXTER'S DAUGHTER, IS LISTED AS A LAWYER IN THE 1898 CITY DIRECTORY.

TAX RECORDS SHOW THAT THIS HOUSE WAS BUILT FOR MARIA BAXTER IN 1868-69 AND MAPS SHOW THAT IT ORIGINALLY WAS LOCATED ON THE CORNER LOT ADJACENT TO IT THAT IS NOW OCCUPIED BY THE C. H. BAXTER HOUSE (446 N. MADISON ST.) WHEN THE LATTER HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1895 THIS HOUSE WAS THEN MOVED TO A NEW LOT THAT WAS CREATED BETWEEN THE W. B. AND C. H. BAXTER HOUSES.
