Additional Information: | Locally designated: 11/12/1985. Excellent example of a very early type of double flat in nearly original condition. Abundance of Eastlake style ornamentation including window surrounds with shed type hoods, original entrance porches, and a fine corner tower. Architectural Statement: Description: The house is a two story frame building executed in the Italianate style. It is situated on the corner of North Hubbard and East Lloyd streets. It is cross shaped in plan with a gable facing each street, and wrapping around a square tower on the corner. The tower contains the entry and rises three stories to a belvedere capped by a truncated pyramidal roof. Each gable end contains a projecting bay, that on Hubbard being a two-story, half-hexagonal shape and that on Lloyd being a shallower rectangular projection. The window on the first and second floors are flat topped, while those in the attic and tower have pointed heads. Two elaborate bracketed cornices above the second and third levels decorate the tower. The house incorporates a variety of very interesting Ialianate window hoods. (1982 photo 30-12). Significance: The architectural significance of the house is its very well detailed execution in the Italian "villa" style, with handsome tower and outstanding window hoods. The building is the only one of its type in the Brewers Hill area and remains almost intact. Historical Statement: The house originally was constructed on the northwest corner of North Holton Street and East Garfield Avenue, but in 1892 was moved three blocks to the southwest to the southeast corner of North Hubbard and East Lloyd streets. The owner at the time was Fred Filter of the masonry contracting firm of Jaeger & Filter. The cost of the move and the new stone foundation was $1500. L. Bartz was the building mover. |
