NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This fine Gothic Revival house is a frame building with two stories and a steeply pitched roofline. Projecting from the roof are both gable projections and gable peaks. Finials decorate all gable peaks. The tall, narrow windows of the house are generally of two types. Wider windows of the first floor are decorated with label moldings. Windows on the upper story are generally paired with round arch decorations. There are several smaller windows punctuating the facades of the house. They are trimmed with label or other moldings. A small front porch covers the front entrance which consists of a plain wood and glass door and label molding. The side entrance has a larger porch with simple posts, delicate brackets, and a decorated frieze. A two-story carriage house with plain board siding accompanies the site. Both the house and carriage house are in very good condition. This house is a fine example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture. Its steeply pitched roof with multiple gable projections and peaks, round-arched windows and windows with label moldings are typical elements of the style. The house and its matching carriage house has a high level of integrity. This house is probably the finest Gothic Revival house in Janesville. Additional research in tax rolls or deeds is necessary for an exact date of construction and original owner of this house. However, its most well-known occupant was Francis Grant, a court reporter, who with his wife Harriet, lived in the house from the 1880s until the mid-twentieth century. It is possible that further investigation into this property will uncover an individual of historical significance who built and/or lived in this house in the mid-nineteenth century.
