Additional Information: A MANSARD ROOF PUNCTUATED BY ORNAMENTED WINDOW SURROUNDS ON THE DORMERS, ELABORATE DETAIL (INCLUDING BRACKETS, PORCH POSTS, CUT-OUT WORK), AND BOTH ROUND AND SEGMENTAL ARCH OPENINGS CHARACTERIZE THE FORMER NATHAN RESIDENCE. THIS TWO STORY HOUSE IN THE SECOND EMPIRE STYLE HAS AN IRREGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION, A BRICK AND SHINGLE EXTERIOR, BASKET-HANDLE OPENINGS AND ITS ORIGINAL WINDOWS. THIS BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED IN 1874, WAS FOUND TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. (A). THE SURVEY EVALUATION CRITERIA USED ARCHITECTURE\ENGINEERING DATA.

ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT:
WITHIN THE CITY OF LANCASTER, THE JOSEPH NATHAN HOUSE, A CHARMING BRICK AND WOOD SHINGLE RESIDENCE, PROVIDES AN EXCEPTIONAL ILLUSTRATION OF SECOND EMPIRE ARCHITECTURE. THE NOTEWORTHY LOCAL DESIGN INCLUDES THE STYLISTIC HALLMARK -- THE MANSARD ROOF -- AS WELL AS ABUNDANT, VISUALLY-RICH DETAIL WHICH HAS BEEN MAINTAINED SINCE THE HOME'S CONSTRUCTION IN 1874.


HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
JOSEPH NATHAN WHO LIVED IN THIS HOME FROM 1874 TO C. 1905, WAS THE SON OF JACOB NATHAN, AN EARLY AND SUCCESSFUL LANCASTER MERCHANT. THE YOUNGER NATHAN BECAME INVOLVED IN HIS FATHER'S BUSINESS, NATHAN, SCHREINER & CO., (132 E. MAPLE STREET, 42/30) IN 1866 AND BY 1881 WAS A CO-OWNER. A YEAR LATER HE WITHDREW FROM THAT FIRM AND ESTABLISHED HIS OWN GROCERY AND MEAT MARKET WHICH BECAME NATHAN & SONS (118 S. MADISON STREET, 42/20). (B,C)

NOTE: A MODERN VINYL-CLAD ONE-STORY ADDTION HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE REAR OF THIS HOUSE SINCE IT WAS FIRST SURVEYED IN 1976.
