NOTES
Additional Information: THIS FRAME CHURCH STRUCTURE ON A STONE FOUNDATION HAS A PITCHED GABLE TERNEPLATE ROOF THAT IS INTERSECTED AT THE FRONT BE A SQUARE ENTRANCE TOWER SUPPORTING AN OCTAGONAL STEEPLE. POINTED LOUVERED OPENINGS IN THE BASE OF THE STEEPLE, POINTED ARCHED WINDOWS, A RECTANGULAR STAINED GLASS WINDOW IN THE TOWER AND A BRACKETED POINTED ARCH DOOR HOOD ARE GOTHIC REVIVAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS 19TH CENTURY CHURCH. AN ENTRY BAY AT THE NORTH SIDE OF THE FRONT FACADE SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE. THE CHURCH WAS RESIDED IN VINYL BETWEEN 1983 AND 2005.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

ST. PAUL'S EVANGELICAL CHURCH IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AS AN EXAMPLE OF PROVINCIAL VERNACULAR CHURCH ARCHITECTURE OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. IMPORTANT TO THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF PLATTEVILLE, THIS CHURCH IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS ONE OF THE FEW 19TH CENTURY CHRUCHES REMAINING IN THE COMMUNITY AND AS THE ONLY FRAME EXAMPLE.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS CHURCH WAS BUILT BY ST. PAUL'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CONGREGATION IN 1876 AT A COST OF $4,000. THE DATE, 1876, IS INDICATED ON THE PLAQUE ABOVE THE DOORWAY. ST. PAUL'S CONGREGATION HAD BEEN FORMED AFTER A SPLIT WITHIN THE LUTHERAN CHURCH OF PEACE OVER QUESTIONS OF DOGMA. THE SAME CHURCH IS IN USE OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS LATER.
