Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS CONCRETE POST OFFICE BUILDING HAS A HIP ROOF WITH A BALUSTRATE AROUND THE TOP OF THE STRUCTURE AND CONCRETE PIERS PROJECTING FRONT THE ELEVATIONS AT INTERVALS AROUND THE ENTIRE STRUCTRE THAT TERMINATE IN THE PARAPET. A CORNICE COMPOSED OF DENTIL AND EGG AND DART MOLDINGS AND A FRINGE OF DECORATIVE SHIELDS AT INTERVALS AROUND THE STRUCTURE AND A FESTOON PLAQUE AT EITHER SIDE OF THE DOOR DECORATES THE SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURE. LARGE, LONG WINDOWS OF 24 PANES, A PROJECTING CARVED DOOR HOOD, A TRANSOM WINDOW OVER THE DOUBLE DOOR ENTRANCE AND CAST IRON LIGHTS ON A PEDISTAL WITH CLAW FEET FURTHER ACCENT THE STRUCTRE. A SOUTHERN DOOR WAS REPLACED BY A WINDOW AND THERE IS SOME ALTERATION FOR THE LOADING DOCK ON THE EAST SIDE. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY HISTORIC STYLES, THIS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY OF PLATTEVILLE AS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURES MAINTIANED IN ITS ORIGINAL STYLE FOR THE MOST PART, IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF THE CITY. IT REPRESENTS A TYPE, PERIOD OR METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: THIS POST OFFICE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN THE YEARS 1910 AND 1911, AND WAS ORIGINALLY OCCUPIED IN JUNE OF 1911. (A,B). IT WAS BUILT BY MILWAUKEE CONTRACTOR, HENRY FERGZ. (B). THE OLD POST OFFICE HAD BEEN LOCATED IN THE SCHULTZ BUILDING BEGINNING IN ABOUT 1900. THE UNITED STATES POST OFFICE BUILING IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LOCALITY.
