A BEIGE (ROMAN) BRICK, THREE-STORY COMMERCIAL STRUCTRE FEATURES A FLAT SLOPING ROOF AND A BRACKETED METAL CORNICE ORNAMENTED WITH A PRESSED METAL FESTOON, SWAG DESIGN AND DENTIL TRIM. THE FACADE IS HIGHLIGHTED BY A KEYSTONE ACCENTED ARCADE OF ARCHED WINDOWS IN THE THIRD STORY OF THE CENTRAL BAY. FULL-LENGHT BRICK PILASTERS RUN FROM THE SECOND FLOOR TO THE BRACKETED CORNICE. "EMPIRE BLOCK -[19]06" IS INSCRIBED IN STONE ABOVE THE THIRD-FLOOR WINDOWS. THIS STORE FRONT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY ALTERED FOR CONTEMPORARY USE. ARCHITECUTRAL SIGNIFICANCE: A LARGE STRUCTURE, THIS COMMERCIAL BUILDING IS IMPORTANT TO THE ARCHITECUTRAL VARIETY OF THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT AS ONE OF THE FEW EXAMPLES OF TURN OF THE CENTURY ARCHITECTURE. IN ADDITION, IT IS VISUALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE OF ITS SIZE. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BUILDING WAS ERECTED BY THE STOCKHOLDERS OF THE EMPIRE MINE TO HOUSE THEIR CLUB ROOM (THIRD FLOOR) IN 1906. THE OTHER FLOORS WERE COMMERCIAL SPACE. |
