NOTES
Additional Information: THIS THREE-STORY COMMERCIAL BLOCK FEATURES A BRICK FACADE, A FLAT SLOPING ROOF AND A PROJECTING CUT-BRICK CORNICE. THE FACADE IS EMBELLISHED BY AN ARCADE OF NINE KEYSTONE-ACCENTED ROUND ARCHED BAYS; EACH BAY CONTAINS RECTANGULAR WINDOWS WITH FLAT STONE LINTELS AND SILLS. THE EAST 1/3 OF THE STRUCTURE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED AT A DIFFERENT TIME THAT THE WEST 2/3 OF THE BLOCK. THE THREE STORE FRONTS IN THE BLOCK HAVE BEEN ALTERED FOR CONTEMPORARY USE. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: THIS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT TO THE MAIN STREET COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BECAUSE OF ITS SUBSTANTIAL SIZE AND ITS EARLY STYLE. HOWEVER, THE STREET LEVEL FACADE ALTERATION HAS DIMINISHED ITS SIGNIFICANCE. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BUILDING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE WITH SMALL SHOPS. THE DATES OF CONSTRUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: 50 W. MAIN WAS BUILT IN 1866; 40 W. MAIN WAS COMPLETED IN 1877; 60 W. MAIN WAS FINISHED IN 1868. 40 AND 50 WEST MAIN STREET WERE ORIGINALLY THE WILLIAM AND JOHN GRINDELL FURNITURE STORE AND CABINET SHOP. 60 WEST MAIN STREET WAS THE T & T JENKINS BUILDING. THIS BLOCK CONTAINED AT ONE TIME IN ITS HISTORY A GROCERY. ALSO ON THIS BLOCK AT AN UNKNOWN DATE, A PERSON NAMED SMITH OWNED A HARDWARE STORE. SANDERS OWNED A BAKERY THERE AS WELL AT AN UNKNOWN DATE.
