Additional Information: THIS TWO-STORY BRICK HOUSE FEATURES AN ELEVATED CUT STONE FOUNDATION, AND A TRUNCATED HIP ROOF THAT IS INTERSECTED BY A PEDIMENTED GABLE ROOF TO THE WEST AND OVER A THREE-SIDED BAY AT THE FRONT. THE FULL-LENGTH FRONT PORCH IS DESIGNED WITH A FLAT ROOF, DENTIL TRIM, BRICK PORCH RAILINGS AND SHORT, CLUSTERED TUSCAN COLUMNS. TWO CHIMNEY CROWNS WITH DECORATIVE BRICK WORK, A PALLADIAN STYLE WINDOW IN THE NORTH GABLE, CONCRETE LINTELS, AND A SIDE LIGHTED DOOR WITH AN OVERHEAD TRANSOM WINDOW ARE FEATURES OF THIS LATE QUEEN ANNE HOUSE.

ARCHITECUTRAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS HOUSE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS THE SECOND BEST BRICK EXAMPLE OF THE LATE QUEEN ANNE STYLE. IT IS IMPORTANT TO THE WEST MAIN STREET DISTRICT AS A VISUALLY PROMINENT HOUSE ON THE WEST END OF THE DISTRICT.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1908-1909 FOR CHARLES BURG, WHO WAS A PROMINENT PLATTEVILLE CLOTHIER. HE POSSESSED THE HOME FROM 1908 TO 1945. THE NEXT OWNER WAS MR. MELCHER WHO SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE MINING SCHOOL UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1963. HE POSSESSED THE HOME FROM C. 1945 TO 1963. (SEE BIB. REF. C).
