NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS BRICK, MID-19TH CENTURY GOTHIC REVIVAL CHURCH WITH A SLOPING ROOF HAS A SHORT, SQUARE, FLAT-ROOFED ENTRANCE TOWER WITH A BELFRY, STEPPED BUTTRESSES ALONG THE WALL AND TOWER, SINGLE AND DOUBLE POINTED ARCH WINDOW OPENINGS AND ENTRANCE PORTAL, A ROSE WINDOW ABOVE THE ENTANCE, DECORATIVE CUT-BRICK WORK ON ALL LEVELS AND BELGIAN STAINED GLASS WINDOWS. G. NETTLETON OF JANESVILLE WAS THE ARCHITECT FOR THIS CHURCH BUILDING. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: ONE OF THE TWO MOST ELABORATE OF THE 19TH CENTURY CHRUCH DESIGNS REMAINING IN PLATTEVILLE (THE OTHER IS THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AT 80 MARKET STREET), THIS CHURCH STRUCTURE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE VICTORIAN GOTHIC REVIVAL CHURCH AND IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS A CHURCH STRUCTURE HELD BY THE SAME CONGREGATION SINCE IT WAS BUILT IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY. IN ADDITION, IT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE. HISTORIC BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: THIS CHURCH WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1864 AND 1865, AND DEDICATED IN AUGUST OF 1867 AS TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH. PRIOR TO 1962, THE EPISCOPALIANS OF PLATTEVILLE HAD TO ATTEND SERVICES AT LANCASTER OR ELSEWHERE. IN 1862, THE REV. L. C. MILLETTE ESTABLISHED A MISSION IN PLATTEVILLE. SERVICES WERE HELD IN MEMBERS' HOMES UNTIL FUNDS WERE RAISED OUT EAST BY MR. H. KIMBELL TO ERECT A CHRUCH. THE MONEY WAS GATHERED, AND THIS CHURCH WAS BUILT. THE SAME CHURCH IS USED TODAY.
