Additional Information: | THIS BRICK, TWO-STORY STRUCTURE HAS AN ELEVATED FOUNDATION, A FLAT ROOF, STONE LINTELS AND SILLS AND A FLAT ROOFED PORCH (ALTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL) SUPPOTED BY CLUSTERED POSTS. THIS BUILDING WAS FORMERLY THREE STORIES IN HEIGHT AND HAD A STEPPED GABLE ROOF. A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN 1846 TO SERVE AS A RESIDENCE AND HOSPITAL FOR DR. JAMES C. CAMPBELL. DR. CAMPBELL WAS AN ECLECTIC PHYSICIAN PRACTICING IN PLATTEVILLE. HE DEPARTED FOR ST. LOUIS IN 1852 AND LEFT THE HOUSE IN THE CARE OF HIS SON-IN-LAW, A. W. KEMLER. CAMPBELL RETURNED BRIEFLY PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR AND THEN WENT SOUTH AGAIN. HE RETURNED TO JOIN HIS WIFE WHO WAS VISITING HER DAUGHTER IN PLATTEVILLE IN 1879, AND DIED HERE IN 1880. J. C. CAMPBELL HAD RESIDED IN THE HOME AND HOSPITAL FROM 1846 TO 1852. IN THE PASSING YEARS, THERE WERE ALSO OTHERS HAD USED IT AS A HOME. A. W. KEMLER LIVED IN THE BUILDING FROM C. 1852 TO 1900, AND FRAMK HARKER LIVED THERE IN C. 1920. (SEE BIB. REF. C). |
