NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. SET IN AN "ENGLISH CHURCHYARD" SETTING, THIS BRICK 20TH CENTURY INTERPRETATION OF A (NEO)GOTHIC REVIVAL CHURCH STRUCTURE HAS A SLOPING ROOF PENETRATED BY A GABLE ROOFED BAY TO THE EAST, ONE-STORY VESTIBULES PROJECTING FROM THE SIDE ELEVATION AND A GABLE ROOFED ENTRANCE WITH A POINTED ARCHED PORTAL. STONE TRIM, STONE INTERSPERSED BETWEEN THE BRICK, AND BUTTRESSES ON THE SIDE ELEVATIONS ADD TO THE "MODERN GOTHIC" STYLE. ALSO FEATURED ARE A FLATENED ASPIDAL END AND A SIDE NARTHEX. A ONE-STORY HALL AND EXTENSION WAS ADDED TO THE WEST OF THE STRUCTURE IN 1999. THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECT, LEROY GAARDER, PRACTICED IN ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THE ONLY 20TH CENTURY REVIVAL STYLED CHURCH TO REMAIN IN PLATTEVILLE, THIS CHURCH IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AS A REPRESENTATION OF THE 20TH CENTURY APPROACH TO HISTORIC STYLES.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE:

THE ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH WAS ORGANIZED BY MEMBERS OF THE LUTHERAN CONGREGATION WHO DESIRED SERVICES HELD IN ENGLISH RATHER THAN GERMAN. IN 1902, SERVICES WERE HELD IN A BUILDING AT 4TH AND MINERAL STREETS. THE CITY HALL FIRE OF 1926 DAMAGED THE ORIGINAL ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH AND THIS CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1928-1929.
