Additional Information: | F IN THE PHOTO CODES IS SHORT FOR FCS. ARCHITIECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE: THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS INDUSTRIAL BUILDING IS FAIRLY PLAIN. BUT THE ONE-AND-TWO STORY BRICK STRUCTURE DOES FEATURE BRICK, VERTICAL, PILASTER-LIKE EXTENSIONS CAPPED WITH CONCRETE, CONCRETE WINDOW SILLS, WHAT MAY BE TILE EDGING ALONG THE ROOF LINE, MULTI-LIGHTED WINDOWS, AND DECORATIVE CONCRETE WORK ALONGSIDE THE BUILDING'S "OMRO CO-OPERATIVE ONE FACADE. THE BUILDING IS LOCATED ON THE FOX RIVER. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: AS CHEESE FACTORIES IN THE SMALL TOWNS AND RUAL AREAS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL WISCONSIN GO, THIS IS A FAIRLY SUBSTANTIAL BUILDING. ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS NEEDED ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THIS COMPANY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER CHEESE MANUFACTURING IN THE AREA. 2021 - This red brick industrial building was constructed in 1916, with additions to the east beginning in 1922. The primary elevation faces south and is asymmetrically arranged, with the original two-story portion of the complex located on the western end. The southern façade of this original, flat-roofed block is split into three bays, separated by shallow brick pilasters with stone caps. The center bay contains a large overhead garage door and a 10-light metal-sash window above. The left and right bays also contain10-light windows with plain concrete sills on the first and second stories. The windows on this block appear to be original, although several panes are broken. Later additions to the east include one-and two-story portions, with various-sized window openings filled with glass block and rough-cut stone sills. Pedestrian and overhead garage doors are modern, and asymmetrically arranged along the façade. Decorative elements include a soldier brick lintel stringcourse and cut stone insets that flank the “Omro Co-operative Butter & Cheese Co.” sign. |
