Additional Information:THIS BRICK TWO-STORY HOUSE FEATURES A LOW, TRUNCATED HIPPED ROOF, A BRACKETED CORNICE UNDER THE EAVES, STONE LINTELS AND SILLS, AND SIX OVER SIX WINDOWS. THE BALUSTRADED AND DECKED ENTANCE PORCH, WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY TUSCAN COLUMNS, EMBELLISHES THE MAIN DOOR, WHICH IS DESIGNED WITH SIDE LIGHTS AND A TRANSOM WINDOW. A GABLED ONE-STORY EXTENSION PROJECTS TO THE SOUTHWEST.

THIS DWELLING WAS BUILT FOR LEONARD COATES IN 1867-1868. (SEE BIB. REF.H). THORNTON WAS THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO DESIGNED IT.

PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THE BUILDING INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: DIFFENBACHER OWNED IT AT AN UNKNOWN DATE; MR GROOM IN 1915; PROF. HAROLD GEORGE IN 1919; GOODELL FROM 1926 AND 1932; AND LEILA BROWNELL 1932 TO 1935. BROWNELL USED THE STRUCTURE AS A NURSING HOME. ALL OTHERS USED IT AS A RESIDENCE. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THE CURRENT OWNERS ARE MR. AND MRS. ROY KOPP.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

AN EARLY ITALIANATE STYLE BRICK HOUSE IN THE "BRACKETED STYLE," THIS DWELLING IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS ONE OF THREE EARLY BRICK HOUSES TO REMAIN AS THEY WERE BUILT (ALSO GT 1-21 AND GT 1-15) AND IS THE SECOND MOST ELABORATE OF THE THREE.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS HOUSE WAS THE RESIDENCE OF LEONARD COATES, WHO HAD IT BUILT IN 1868. COATES ARRIVED IN PLATTEVILLE IN JUNE OF 1836. HE WAS BORN IN YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND IN 1814. BEGINNING AS A MINER, HE AND JAMES VINYARD BUILT A LEAD FURNACE ON THE ROUNDTREE BRANCH IN 1938. HE SOLD HIS INTEREST IN COATES-VINEYARD FURNACE AND TOOK OVER THOMAS PERRISH FURNACES ON THE BLUE RIVER. TOGETHER WITH ROBERT CHAPMAN, COATES RE-PURCHASED THE VINYARD OPERATION. IN 1847, THE SHULLSBURG FURNACES WERE ADDED TO THEIR HOLDINGS. COATES RETIRED FROM SMELTING IN 1873. HE WAS ACTIVE IN GETTING THE RAILROAD TO PLATTEVILLE, AS WELL AS SERVING AS MAYOR AND CITY TREASURER.
