Additional Information: | A Victorian two story commercial buildilng with a flat sloping roof that has a cream brick veneered sides and back and a red brick front. A pressed design and brackets decorate the main galvanized iron cornice. A cornice and decorative pilasters defining the store front characterize the front facade at street level. The keystone Tudor arched window hoods and bracketed window sills give further visual elegance to this Italianate Victorian structure. One of the three better Victorian commercial structures in downtown Shullsburg, this building has architectural significance as a visual landmark in the center of the commercial district as well as importance as good representative of the commercial Victorian building. Jackson's Confectionary Store has had contributing roles in the economic development of the Shullsburg Commercial District. It had been known as C.G. Miller's Cash Store that occupied two floors, carrying a complete line of ladie's wear--including the latest in shoes and millinery, c. 1880-1907. During the 1880's when Shullsburg was experiencing economic prosperity, Miller was one of the first to fix up his building. In 1884, he added a brick veneer front. The galvanized metal ornamentation was also added at that time. From about 1907 to 1920, F.T. Gundry ran a grocery store and ice cream parlor on the lower floor. The second floor was Drt. S.A.J. Ennis' office and hospital. Dr. Harry Hoesley, a physician and anesthesiologist, had his office there also. He assisted Dr. Ennis in surgery. Howard Jackson has operated the store known as Jackson's Confectionary since 1920. |
