NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS SIMPLE ONE STORY BUSINESS BLOCK IS IDENTIFIED BY PILASTERS WHICH NOT ONLY FRAME THE ENTRANCE AND DISPLAY AREA BUT ALSO DECORATE THE CORNICE. ORIGINALLY, ROUND ARCHES DEMARKED THE STOREFRONT OPENINGS. A BRICK STRINGCOURSE DIVIDES THE FRONT FACADE HORIZONTALLY. THE STRUCTURE HAS A RECTANGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR AND A FLAT ROOF. THE BUILDING IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

BUILT AFTER THE FIRE OF 1900 (ACTUALLY, THE BUILDING FORMERLY LOCATED ON THIS SITE WAS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING AFTER THE FIRE), THIS COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE ORIGINALLY HOUSED THE POTOSI STATE BANK WHICH OPENED MAY 4, 1904. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B). WHEN CONSTRUCTED, THE BUILDING WAS MORE ELABORATELY DETAILED WITH A METAL CORNICE AND ROUND ARCHED ENTRANCE AND DISPLAY AREA. SEE PHOTOGRAPH IN OLD POTOSI. (SEE BIB. REF. D). (NOTE: THE OUTLINES OF THE ARCHES CAN STILL BE SEEN).
